What is the purpose of suffering for a believer?

Suffering is never called good in itself, but God is repeatedly shown using it to form character, deepen dependence and conform believers to Christ.

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:9

And he hath said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my power is made perfect in weakness.
