Did Jesus have to die, or was there another way?

The New Testament treats the cross as necessary given God's justice and mercy together — Gethsemane's 'if it be possible' received no alternative.

Scripture: Hebrews 9:22

And according to the law, I may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and apart from shedding of blood there is no remission.
